What will happen after making a referral?

Once a Safeguarding referral has been made it will be logged onto the Electronic Social Care Record (ESCR) and passed to a Safeguarding Coordinator.

The Safeguarding Coordinator will generally be a team manager in the local area or specialist team. They will decide whether action needs to be taken under safeguarding and will inform the manager of their decision, having considered all the information gathered so far.

Adult Social Care will usually co-ordinate any investigations unless a crime has been committed. In criminal cases the Police will take the lead role whilst the crime is investigated and safeguarding investigation activity by Social Care will resume only when the Police have concluded their investigations. Steps to safeguard the individual will continue however throughout any Police action.

Please see our 'Multi-Agency Policy, Procedure and Practice Guidelines' for more information.
